Lose weight.  Exercise more.  Save money.

All noble New Year’s resolutions.

But don’t forget your electrical system.  Here are some resolutions to keep your electrical system running safely and efficiently.

  1. Make sure all appliances, electronics and lights are shut off or –even better – unplugged when not in use.
  2. Do a nighttime check to ensure everything is shut off.
  3. Use energy-efficient LED lighting, which requires less energy to produce light.
  4. Connect multiple appliances, etc. to a power strip, and turn the power strip off when not in use.
  5. Invest in surge protectors to protect your appliances, electronics, computers, etc. in case of a power surge.
  6. Make sure you know what each circuit breaker in your circuit breaker box controls.  Write it down and have it by the box, or have it on your computer or phone.
  7. Have a flashlight by your circuit breaker box in case the breaker that tripped controls the lighting near the box.
  8. If one circuit breaker keeps tripping, or multiple breakers keep tripping, investigate rewiring.
  9. If you are going to try to replace a light switch or outlet yourself, take the old one to the hardware store to make sure you get the right replacement.
  10. Buy a generator so you will be prepared if you lose power for an extended period.
  11. Electricity can kill.  If you are going to do something yourself, make sure you know what you are doing.  Otherwise call a professional electrical contractor.
